Finishing Pine
copyright Phil M Beaudet 2001

If you bought a piece of unfinished pine furniture that you want to finish your self and you are

not sure how to get started, then this report will guide you through, step by step.

1-Work area

Should be well lighted.

You need to see what your doing.

You need a light source that you can reposition to light up the area

that you are working on.

Keep moving the light as you work.

I use a quarts light on a stand that is on wheels.

I also put all my work on a large turn table.

The light source should be in back of you and to one side.

Do not place the light in front of you, unless it's directed

away from your eyes.

Over head lighting is required also.

If your working outside, DON'T work in direct sun light.

Clean work area the day before you start, to give the dust a

chance to settle.

Work area height- Work at a comfortable height, to save your back.

Safety- Use ALL safety precautions.

Wear gloves

Respirator

If your working inside, ( close ALL pilots. gas) - Unless your using

water base products.

Forced drying can be used if suggested by manufacture.

If you force dry, make sure your work area is clean, or you

will disturb any dust that may be present, that will land on

the piece you are working on.

Read ALL manufactures labels, and abide by them.

If you get tired !! QUIT for the day.

When you get tired, You may make mistakes, or cause an accident.

Exhaust fan can be used if using water base products.

Have ALL your finishing materials in plain site, preferable in front of you,

out of harms way, NOT on the floor.

Material List- And Rules To Follow.

I would recommend ALL water base products. for safety reasons)

Buy ALL your finishing supplies from the same manufacture.

Mixing or using different brand products may cause problems.

Check ALL dates on containers of finishes and stain etc.

To make sure that they are not expired.

If the dates are written in code, mark the dates your self.

1-Finish Brushes- Get a good one, Spend the extra money.

Any good natural bristle brush will do.

I would favor a 2 1/2 inch or a 3 inch brush (tapered).

Be sure to clean and store your brush properly.

2- Stain- Pick a wipe-on stain. NOT a penetrating stain.

A penetrating stain may be to difficult to apply properly,

especially on pine.

3- Sealer Coat - You may need depending on the brand on finish

you select.

Some finishes act as there own sealer, when thinned down.

Again check with the manufacture.

4- Finish Coat - I would favor a water base poly.

5- Tack Cloth - To pick up dust after sanding.

6 - Sand paper - 100 grit/ 150 grit/ 250 grit/ 600 grit.

Purchase some foam sanding blocks. or use a electric sander

DO NOT use a belt sander.

Use a orbital sander instead.

I use a porter cable speed block model 330 orbital sander.

7 - Wood Conditioner - You may need to control the stain

from absorbing into the wood to fast.

Check with your supplier and manufacturer if they recommend this product.

8 - Wood Cleaner - This you need to clean the wood BEFORE you apply

your stain. Again ! Check with your supplier and manufacturer

and buy their brand.

9 - Stain Brush - This will be used to apply stain, and will be helpful

in getting stain into inside corners, and fancy scroll work.

A good quality (tapered) natural bristle brush will do.

10 - Rags - Use lint free cotton cloths ONLY!!!

Used to apply the stain.

11 - Small tooth brush or plastic brush.

Used to pull the excess stain out of corners and scroll work.

12 - Mixing sticks - Used to stir your finish and stain.

13 - Thermometer - Used to check temperature of finish.

14 - Temperature controlled room.

Temperature should be around 65 to 75 degrees.

15 - Humidity - Humidity should be normal.

To high or to low would cause problems.

16 - Lastly - After your piece is finished

DON'T touch it!! DON'T try to move it

DON'T put any fans on, or cause any air movement.

Leave it seat there undisturbed.

Finishes need to cure!!! And it takes different finishes

different lengths of time to cure properly.

If the piece you are working on is a dresser or table,

DON'T put ANYTHING on the top for at lease two weeks.

17 - Nylon stocking - Used to check your wood to determine

in it's ready for stain.
